The River Monks “Of The Land (Live @ Raccoon River Brewery)”

What does home mean to you?

During the last few months of 2013, I found myself asking that question. I spent a lot of time dissecting the idea of home, wondering what made up my understanding of place. I truthfully had no idea. Home to me has always been Iowa. The feelings and emotions associated with my home state are the most comforting I know. I have always believed I was at peace while in Iowa, but I still felt some twinge of uncertainty about what I had done to make this place home. Before DEFT, I wasn’t sure how I could help.

When I decided to put everything into DEFT, I was making a decision to improve my home. This has always been about art, and art is one of the major contributions necessary to create a home. DEFT exists to highlight the things that make us feel the comfort of home. It is for these reasons that this song by The River Monks hit me so hard. This musical mastery is a reminder that we always need to progress. The words call me to action, whispering the importance of hard work and dedication. “Of The Land” makes me want to grow. With that being said, I won’t make promises. I won’t fill your heads with empty words. Instead, I thank you for being a piece of my home. I look forward to improving it together.
